In what order should ear drops be administered?

Water-based drops before oil-based

When administering more than one ear drop with different bases, start with the water-based medication. Water-based drops are designed to be absorbed by the ear canal tissues, so applying them first allows the medication to contact and act on the mucosa effectively. If an oil-based drop goes in first, the oil can coat the canal and form a barrier that hinders the subsequent water-based drop from reaching its target, reducing absorption and effectiveness. After the water-based drop has been given, the oil-based drop can be used to seal and retain moisture, helping to keep the medication in place and prolong contact time. If both are prescribed, administer the water-based one first, then the oil-based, allowing a short interval between applications to maximize absorption.
